| Featured Artist of the Month November: Peter
Veljkovich
|
|
Side
Garage Peter Veljkovich (c)2007
|
Peter has used photography to enrich his life from
the 1970s with his SLR film camera photographing his
hometown of Flushing, New York, and the streets of
Manhattan, to documenting his kids in the 80's and 90's,
and into the new millennium. In 2005, with
his new digital camera, Peter started to shoot alleys in
Littleton, Englewood and Denver. He wanted to look
behind the pristine storefronts, and he found his
version of paradise-old brick walls, painted circuit
breaker boxes, phone cables, downspouts, cans, and
refuse in the gritty alleys.
In the late hours of the day, when the harsh Colorado
sun moves close to the mountain tops, the light turns
subtle and adds the necessary mystery to the mundane
alleys. That is when Peter Veljkovich loves composing
images, by searching for the interesting components of
the industrial world and adding life to them, because
"attention must be paid" to the unnoticed.
Peter has exhibited at McKinner's Restaurant, the
Buck Recreation Center in downtown Littleton and at
Artists on Santa Fe in August of 2007.
Advise to other AAL Artists:
It sounds simple. Keep making art and
looking for places to display it. But really-
that's the key. Try to keep creating your art
consistently. This is how the artist grows-by creating
consistently. But that's not enough. One
must keep a ever vigilant eye for venues that showcase
your work. It's a balance. One thing I
personally have discovered is one thing leads to
another. If you keep creating and hanging your
art, good things will
happen. Contact Info:

"AUTUMN ACCENTS" EXHIBIT OPENS AT
LITTLETON'S GARAGE GALLERY
|
|
Throughout the month of November an exhibit of
vibrant, new paintings will be featured at The Garage
Gallery and Fine Art Studio, "the gallery in the
alley," in historic downtown Littleton. Tucked in
the alley off Rapp Street, this beautifully renovated
former automotive garage serves as an elegant-yet-funky
working studio and a showcase for the four resident
partners and other featured artists on an ongoing basis.
Opening November 2, 2007 with an artists' reception from
5 - 9 p.m., "Autumn Accents" features the freshest work
of the gallery's four partners, Susan Rommel, Kati
Rosenbaugh, Barb Simasko, and Don Simasko. The show will
run through December 7, 2007.
These Colorado artists have been making art together
since meeting in a painting class several years ago.
Their prolific work reflects a broad range of styles,
from representational to impressionistic to abstract,
and has been selected for numerous awards and accepted
in many juried shows. Susan Rommel specializes in
luminous impressionistic landscapes, from reflecting
pools and mountain meadows to sunlit aspen groves. Kati
Rosenbaugh favors bold, splashy florals and dynamic
renderings of ballet and flamenco dancers who seem to
twirl right off the canvas. Barb Simasko's unabashed use
of bold colors, rich textures and loose brushstrokes in
her own art springs from a lifelong love of
impressionists in particular. Don Simasko's vivid,
harmonious paintings of rural and urban landscapes and
characters evoke a keen sensory response in the viewer.
His work was most recently featured in a one-man show at
Littleton's Terracotta Café.
According to Don Simasko, "In addition to creating a
venue for marketing the work of our four original
founding partners, our mission at The Garage is to
provide opportunities for local artists to showcase
their work." To this end, since its inception in 2000,
the Garage Gallery has featured the work of emerging, as
well as seasoned artists. The Garage also hosted and
will continue to host the opening of the popular
Littleton Public School Art Exhibit Tour.
The Garage Gallery is carving out a niche in the
burgeoning Littleton art scene, forming alliances with
other gallery owners and business organizations.
Exhibits at the gallery change regularly. With a new
exhibit every six weeks or so, visitors always find
something novel to intrigue and delight them. Since the
Garage Gallery opened its doors, the partners have
continued to build a reputation for quality, each with
his or her own loyal following. A recent article
in the Rocky Mountain News covering the
downtown Littleton community stated, "Everybody likes to
discover an artist. Here is a tip to help in your
search: Wander off Main Street and don't rule out places
that look like a garage."
The Garage Gallery's "Autumn Accents" exhibit opens
to the public on November 2nd and runs
through December 7th. Gallery hours are 11-5,
Wednesday through Saturday and by appointment. Visitors
are welcome to come browse or just watch the artists at
work. For more information on the gallery, resident
artists, or the upcoming exhibits, contact The Garage
Gallery, 5784 S. Rapp St., Littleton, CO 80120

Albert B. Sanford: A True Son of the Pioneers By
Shirley Smyth
"It is
with a deep sense of regret that I was too young and too
unwise to appreciate the incredible life of my
grandfather, Albert B. Sanford. My grandfather was the
only son of Littleton pioneers and my great-grandparents
Mollie and By Sanford. He died when I was ten years old,
but I am blessed that I have some very special memories
of him from my childhood. His obituaries at his death
mourned the fact that with him gone, also gone was a
deep reservoir of lore and history of early Colorado and
its pioneers. It wasn't until many years later did I
realize the impact he had made, with his many writings
and projects in the desire to keep Colorado's early
history alive.
Albert
Sanford was born at Camp Weld in Denver during the Civil
War and grew up in Denver, becoming one of Denver's
first high school graduates. He attended Denver
University, receiving a diploma in mining engineering.
In 1924 he became the assistant curator of history at
the Colorado State History Museum. His primary specialty
for this position was mining and territorial history;
however he spent much of his time collecting stories and
writing about Colorado's early settlers and pioneers. He
realized that many of Colorado's early historic sites
were in danger of being lost; much of his dedication was
in marking these important sites.
His love
of Colorado history almost cost him his life. In marking
the 59th anniversary of Colorado's statehood he
advertently walked in front of a cannon that was being
fired. He did survive, however, to spend many more
productive years in the state he loved so
much."

opportunities for K-12 students, university students,
professional musicians and the community. Stephen also
teaches privately at his studios in Golden and
