Butterfly hand made paper w/water paint

I have enjoyed sketching since childhood; however, I did not have the time to pursue my art until my eldest daughter entered high school when I took an oil painting class with a local artist. I continued in that medium for several years until I started sketching in watercolor as a reference: watercolor finally won over and I discontinued oil. I have explored and enjoyed many mediums over the ensuing years, but after seeing an exhibit of paper sculpture several years ago my heart was wNovember 29, 2011 9:09 AMnue to perfect. At this time I am continuing to work on a variety of flowers, having made a rocky mountain sheep and a bald eagle, with my latest piece being “Swallow Tail Butterfly”.

MY PAPER FABRICATION TECHNIQUE
Each multi-layered cast-paper sculpture encompasses hours of research and measurements of specimens.

After making the primary sculpture out of Sculpy clay I make a plaster mold of each element and its background. Next I place into a deep vat of distilled water cotton linters (these are the short cotton fibers that are left after the cotton seed is removed and the long fibers are spun into thread). I have a screen mold which I then dip into the vat to collect the cotton fibers upon so that most of the moisture can be removed before I press the now 100% acid free paper into my original plaster mold (each piece of art can be comprised of dozens or more molds for its various components). When removed from the mold each piece of paper is then trimmed and attached to the background. Depending upon the piece, some of the elements may then be painted. All works are signed, numbered

Limited editions, with the original molds being destroyed upon production completion.

I am mostly self-taught in this medium, having recently taken a workshop with Janthina DuSavage in Bremerton, Washington.
